Revolutionizing Tea Shops: A Spatial Discussion by UND Design Studio

Creating Multi-Dimensional Sensory Experiences in Tea Drinking

UND Design Studio redefines the tea shop experience with their innovative design project, "Discussion of Space". This project, inspired by the challenge of creating a standard system that caters to diverse storefront needs, introduces a unique suspended tea space that transforms tea drinking into an immersive, multi-dimensional sensory experience.

The project, located in Shenzhen, China's design capital, stands out for its unique properties. The design team, led by Encome, Matthew, Benson, Monte, and Ray, leveraged the city's cultural and innovative landscape to create a tea shop that aligns with the owner's vision of making tea drinking a cool and different brand concept. The team used a pure white block as the starting point, creating a unique suspended tea space that opens up more communication possibilities through a rich spatial experience.

The realization of the design involved combining different materials according to functional needs. For instance, white furniture paint was used for more wear-resistant surfaces, while white artificial stone was used for countertops, requiring special attention to waterproofness and seamlessness. The white ceiling was painted with environmentally friendly art paint, and gray terrazzo was chosen as the base of the space for the floor and wall, setting off the white shape and making the space more three-dimensional, cleaner, and cooler.

The design's technical specifications are rooted in the project's formation from unit body modulus, a feature closely related to industrial production technologies such as human engineering, space behavior, and materials science. The design, production, construction, and functional requirements were combined, with values ranging from multiples of 15 to 30, 45, 60, and so on.

The project posed several challenges, including a tight timeframe of just two and a half months from design to completion. The team had to design a project in a standard system that meets the needs of a store with different functions and different storefronts. The solution was a new space that meets the needs of modern people in different statuses, with white lights and blocks reorganized horizontally and vertically by different angles and orientations.

The "Discussion of Space" project has been recognized for its innovative approach to tea shop design, winning the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The award is a testament to the project's strong technical characteristics, splendid artistic skill, and remarkable level of excellence.
